the thursday thirteen...

thirteen reasons i grow my own food:

1) i'm a long dadgum way from the grocery store

2) i get a tremendous sense of satisfaction seeing food on
the table that i've seen to myself

3) i know exactly what my family is eating

4) i like not being at the mercy of the big food companies

5) MY prices aren't going up like crazy

6) i'm lessening my carbon footprint on the earth

7) i get lots of good healthy fresh air and sunshine while
i'm in the garden

8) no GMOs in MY garden

9) the taste! oh man! the taste!

10) i enjoy the fact that even though we're poor, we eat
better than many people with large incomes that i know

11) even if the cupboards are bare, dinner is only as far away
as my garden

12) i enjoy self sufficiency

13) just because i like it!

:-) So, are strawberrys hard to grow? I'm trying to grow some and my mom tells me that they are tough to grow. I bought a couple packets of seeds the other day for some watermelons, carrots and broccoli. I can't wait to get started. I guess I'm starting a little late. I need to get a book, so I know what I'm doing LOL. :)

Love your TT and sorry for my long comment! :)

We are installing raised beds this spring. I am so sick of the whole "food will kill you" thing. ARG!! We have such a short growing season here in Colorado - you'll have to wish me luck. (I think we'll end up with greenhouse or maybe some coldframes for lettuce.) Where do you get seeds? Are you 100% organic? Do you "double dig"? (We've done french intensive before.)

Happy TT!

Amen, amen!! I am right there with ya honey!!!!
We will grow, can, freeze and dehydrate most of what we will eat.
I use heirloom seeds so I don't have to buy seeds every year and each plant I grow comes with a history.
There is nothing that tastes like food from your own garden.

We had a garden for many years. And it is very fulfilling to be able to cook the vegetables you have grown.

Love the TT! By the way, my husband is putting out tomato plants this year.
Thanks for stopping by.

All I can grow right now are herbs and some fruit. I'm hoping to have an actual yard soon that I can use for gardening. Happy TT.

I love gardening. There is absolutely nothing that tastes as good as a fresh tomato and/or cucumber warmed by the sun. Homemade (canned with you own two hands) spaghetti sauce and pickles are so much better than store bought brands. Great list!

How's THIS for timing? My daughter has a friend over and they are talking about plans for a garden as I'm reading this.

I love growing my own herbs during the summer. We usually do tomatoes and a variety of peppers. I did edamame last year, too; I'd like to do more this year, hopefully with more success....

Excellent TT this week, and great reasons. WI growing season is a ways off but I plan to start growing our own again this year. There is nothing finer than veggies from your own garden.

We were just talking about what we're going to plant a couple of minutes ago!

Happy TT!

Fresh grown produce is always better for you. I don't trust most companies to make my food anymore.

Thanks for visiting my 13! :)

I admire people with gardens. I cannot keep even my plants alive longer than a week, let alone food that I need to eat!

However, garden vegetables are the best!

Exactly! I'll be growing this kind of victory garden for my family this year!

We live close to the store and enjoy the family walks (weather permitting). But I'd like to grow more (also weather permitting lol).
