are ya'll ready for a giveaway??!!

it's only the beginning of january and already i have total

spring fever! i have all my seeds ordered and on their way,
my garden all laid out and ready for seedlings.

as the seed catalogs start to trickle in, i figure most of us will
start itching to get our fingers in the dirt and start the process
of renewal. what better way to celebrate spring is there?

in that spirit, i'm offering a $25 gift certificate to my favorite online
seed company, "heirloom acres". thom kirk and family have served
my needs well ever since i discovered them a few years back. they
offer over 900 varieties of heirloom and open pollinated seeds,
very reasonable prices and have wonderful customer service to boot.
what more could you ask for?

seed potatos? got 'em! strawberry plants? got them too! asparagus crowns?
onion sets? organic herb plants? "heirloom acres" has 'em all!!
and new for 2008 are backyard birding and mason bee supplies!

just what do you have to do to throw your name in the hat for
the gift certificate? comment on this post and tell us something
about your favorite part of gardening.

are you a tomato or chili head? love to produce your families food?
just like getting your hands dirty? now's the time to let the world know!
i'll choose a random entry on the 15th of january and then thom
will get your certificate and catalog right out to you!

I cannot imagine having my arden laid out, but I need to be thinking on it, as this is my first year in ever so many that we get to have a REAL garden again.
We love to grow all the makings we need for salsa. I also need to learn how to replant Concord grapes and such as we have wild batches here and they don't grow to a nice size. Also need to plot out so much...I guess add me in for the contest, I think we could use it.
Glad you survived the stomach bug...it was a rough end to 2007 for us health wise too.

Okay, I am begging my pals for a bit of help today and this week. I entered a poetry contest, part of my writing goal, and am asking you pop here: http://wannabeawritersomeday.blogspot.com/2008/01/i-am-entering-poetry-contest-yikes-and.html and if you like what you read, think about following the link at the end of the post and voting for me.
Thanks a bunch.
Your pal, Penelope

Jayedee, I so love heirloom tomatoes.. My neighbor thought I was the greatest when I delivered the 1 pound thangs! My ground might be a bit frozen today, but I'll figure out something real soon.

And you are so invited to spend time in my casa, anytime you want to come this way...bring sunshine with you girl!

Blessings, LeAnn

I love being able to walk out into my yard and see the flowers or vegetable plants that I have nurtured from a seedling..growing and blooming and rising up towards the sun.I love photographing the fruits of my labor..and of course when it comes to the vegetables..walking inside and announcing"look what came out of the garden today!"

Extremely generous of you to offer a drawing like this by the way..loads of fun!

So sorry that you had a stomach virus. Hope you are on the mend and feeling lots better now.

Have a lovely week.

I'm excited about this years garden too! We are planning on doubling the size from last year. We've been composting and getting the soil ready and with this warm spurt it is tempting to start ordering everything now. We planted a bit early last year and then had a freeze at Easter so I'm going to try and be more patient. I don't want to have to lay tarp again! Put me in for the drawing. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Jayedee
I love your blog and I've only had a little bit of time to start reading.
I love to garden and I started a vegetable garden last year. I did pretty good and got about 30 butternut squash from 6 plants, some romas, hot peppers and my yellow and green beans really didn't do to well. The basil was wonderful. Your space in the country sounds wonderful, I'm gardening in the burbs but my garden size keeps growing :) This year I'm hoping to put in a more herbs and some new veggies.
I'm planning putting in dill and hopefully the beans will do well so I can make some killer dillers and have lots of can in the pantry for the winter.
Hope all is well with you and your family and I can't wait to get back to do some more reading.
Hugs Cheryl McCloskey

I'm looking forward to the harvest. But before that, I'm looking forward to planting and working in my garden with my 4 yr old! And the excitement he'll have when the first green shoots come through the earth, and the first cherry tomato is ready to be picked. I haven't been able to have a garden since he was born, so its going to be a good year!

I love to garden! We bought our house a year ago and I spent this past year getting the ground ready for tomatoes, peppers, spaush, etc. I cannot wait to show my 2 and 3 yo you don't have to buy food in a store...lol Kristy

Daphne shared this with me and so after looking at your site (which BTW is very nice), I decided to jump in on your contest. This year will be the first year, God willing that my step daughter will be living with us. She is going to be 12 and has talked nonstop about this huge garden we will be putting in together. This is on the ever growing list of things she wants to do with a "mom". She promises that whatever we grow she will try it and like most of it...LOL..we will see about that. Thanks for the great idea, it has been fun.

Oh Jaydee!!!
What a WONDERFUL giveaway!!!
I have never ordered anything from this site, never really heard of it either.
I am a newbie gardener, I have gardened for several years but still not great at it, getting better each year though! HOORAY! :D
I anticipate each year, I have high hopes and get giddy when everything starts coming up.
I guess my favorite part of my garden is the first signs that my labor is paying off, there are sweet little sprouts of life, little miracles enveloped in each tiny seed! It amazes me to no end! And then to see it take off and grow big and beautiful and produce fruit! I LOVE it so much! And then to take the abundance of what God put in that tiny seed that I began with, to take it in, to preserve it for later, making jams, salsas, soups, oh it is a PURE joy for me! I LOVE it!!!
Even if I don't win, thank you for this wonderful contest!!!
Blessings to you my friend!
Love,
Chas

My goal this year is to reduce or food budget by 25% using our garden! Since this will only be our 2nd year with a garden, I am a little nervous, but hopeful :) Our budget for seeds and plants is small, so I'm crossing my fingers on this one! What I fun idea to do give-aways on your blog!

I am a gardenaholic -- need a 12 step program for me:-) I plan and redesign and replan over and over. I am handicapped, so I have to plan between wants and what I have the health to do -- but I soooo love my own grown heirloom maters and peas and carrots and beets and.... Yum!!
Thanks Jayedee!

I am very, very excited about having a garden again! I used to live in an underground house in Vermont. I had 2 acres of raised beds and a half acre orchard. Then I sold the farm, moved to Florida and through a series of seemingly unlikely events, I ended up homeless for a year and a half. I just got an apartment and it has a patio and a bit of land. YES!!! I'm going to be able to garden again!

Thank you for posting a link to your blog. Have fun!

Oh .. did I tell you why I love gardening??? Well.. because my mother never did it.. but my great Aunt from England had the best little garden.. and she turned to me one day and said.. "You will make the best farmers wife... your heart is in the earth"... I think I was 11 then.. she taught me how to make homemade bread.. and lather it with butter and peanut butter.. BEST!!! I adored the time I spent with her.. and didn't realize it until I became an adult what she did for me!!

This time of year is always my favorite part of gardening! I think I relish the possibilities more than anything else. So far I have only managed to grow more peppers than any self-respecting Latin American family could eat in a year and a hand full of okra that never made it to the house because I ate it all on the walk back from the garden (it is a long walk!) I can daydream for hours about hundreds (thousands?) of quart jars lining my storage shelves and a freezer full of green beans and corn on the cob to go with our home-grown chicken. I haven't managed much of those things yet (a dozen jars of salsa sort of pales in comparison) but each year I manage a little more. I reckon by the time I'm 80 I should be a great gardener :D

Count me in for this fab-oo giveaway!

Blessings!

I do make some mean salsa and look forward to more of the same this year- hopefully with more of my own tomatoes.

What's not to love about gardening? I love the smell of the soil, the warmth of the sun on my back as I work, that sense of satisfaction when you eradicate the weeds, the joy in a bountiful harvest, the fun memories formed during this family affair, and on and on...

My favorite part of gardening is sharing the harvest! I do a mini-CSA garden, and LOVE sharing recipes with my friends, and see the excitement on their faces when they get a new box! It's always a fun challenge figuring out what to do with the variety, and to eat in season! It's so fulfilling, in more ways than one!
