today's thursday thirteen is dedicated to stinky
dogs everywhere....
thirteen ways to de-skunk your pooch!
1) We immediately put vanilla extract on her and some eye drops in her eyes. After a night in the garage, I gave her a Dawn bath today and reapplied the vanilla extract. I do not spell any skunk musk on her.
2)Tomato juice with lemon juice squeezed in, a bit of pepper and celery salt also helps. Mixed with vodka, taken internally. Dog doesn’t get any but you like him again. Not for prework, just evenings.
3) This is the steps I used to get rid of the odor completely:
Colgate Whitening Toothpaste - rub into hands and work paste into fur
Rinse
Dawn - work into foam
Rinse
Lime Juice - pour into hands and rub into fur
Rinse
Garnier Fructis Shampoo - shampoo as directed
Rinse
Can put my nose into fur and smell fruity, minty odor!!
4) 5 cans of tomato juice
2 frozen can of consentrate orange juice
many squirts of dawn dishsoap
couple glugs of peroxide
rub on animal as shampoo in a bath bathe thoroughly then wash off and apply dawn dishsoap if it still smells repeat every 3 hrs best result blow dry when done
5) I have found that shampooing them well and rinsing with Downy works the best. Their coats get really soft too.
6) DO NOT WET THE DOG……..cover the dog with Dawn dishwashing dish detergent. Really get it down in the dog’s coat. Wash off soap. I think we ended up soaping up the dog after we rinsed her. This worked good enough we kept her in the house that same night….in a kennel….in the kitchen, but it wasn’t horrible. Her eye and breath smelled for a month, but it wasn’t noticeable unless she was right up in our face. We used 1/2 bottle of Dawn on our 80lb. lab.
7) TOOTHPASTE is the answer to your Skunk odour problem..I used it on my cat as recommended by a friend….
Wet your pet down and later up with Toothpaste, thoroughly rinse. Your pet will smell minty fresh in no time.
One regular size tube for a cat or small dog.
Two tubes or more depending on the size of your pet.
8) Our Vet recommended “Murphy’s Oil Soap” worked great!!!
Will need to bath the dog/cat a second time after they get wet again, but it will KILL the smell.
9) Massengil Feminine douche. Buy the concentrate and mix up a gallon or so . Poor it over the dog and massage in - set it sit a while. Rise off - no more smell and a soft coat
10) Of all the commercially available skunk odor removers, Nature’s Miracle always seems to get the most praise. Find it in your local pet store.
11) Soda bath-Some people swear by bathing their animals in soda. We’ve heard of people using sprite and coke but haven’t yet tested it ourselves. Work the soda into the fur, rinse and then wash with regular shampoo. Repeat as needed
12) Orange bath-Blend 5-10 oranges in a blender, mix with a little soap and lather up with the resulting liquid. Let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse, then wash with regular shampoo.
13) Peroxide/baking soda bath-This is currently the most effective de-skunking bath, but the peroxide can potentially bleach your animals fur. Lemon juice or white vinegar can be substituted for the peroxide, but they don’t work as well.
In the bathtub or a bucket, mix together:
* 1 gallon water
* 1 quart hydrogen peroxide ~3% solution
* 1 cup baking soda
* 1 good squirt of hand or dish soap
The mixture will fizz. Use a sponge and lather it into the fur/skin taking care to avoid the ears and eyes. Let it sit for 10 minutes, rinse and repeat.

I love your step two! Thankfully we don't have skunks in Israel so the rest won't be needed by me(not to mention because I also don't have a dog).
Hilarious! I've never had to deskunk a dog before but I now feel quite prepared if I ever have to! lol!!
I've bookmarked you and will be back later to read some more. I just watched the Josh Groban video and am in tears. We lost a little boy last year...though our boys are quite a few years apart age-wise, I can understand what you've been through...and are going through. Not completely because each situation is different...I look forward to coming back here later tonight to read more...
Our dog needs a bath, but not a de-skunking bath. :) These are great tips, though, just in case. I perish the thought -- Our dog is half chow. All that fur! All that Dawn!! What a mess.
Very informative TT and I love #2. Thanks for visiting me!
Ewwwwwwwwww... good thing to keep on hand though!
Oh my heck, you poor thing and your poor pooch. I should not laugh. I am evil for laughing. I am laughing.
oh dear sooo ?fun? Poor dog
I don't have a pet, so I won't need any of these - except maybe #2 for other reasons!
Thanks for an informative TT and thanks for visiting mine!
I'm all over step two. Might even practice that one.
But I need to ask: are there any remedies where you don't have to get up close to the animal and smell them before you get them clean? Ugh.
I SO love having indoor cats...
Happy TT, Jaydee!
Oh, this is so good. We don't have skunks down here, but still this can work with other strong odors.
I'm hoping not to need these, but I'm keeping them all the same. One can never be too careful. LOL
Thanks for the visit! :)
Happy TT

JAYEDEE!!! I could have used this a month ago when a friend of mine's dog got skunked!!..it took her about a week of baths to get rid of it...I think I am going to print out this and give it to her, incase it happens again!!!
Thanks!!!
Sorry the skunk got the pup, I would have went to step 2 many times before tackling any other step, and I don't normally drink....but we sure do have the skunks by my MIL's house, not by us though. When we get a dog, I will of course have forgotten all of this info.
That was very interesting but.... I hope I never need that information!
Sounds like the voice of experience ;)
